Sciatica or Syatica

Sciatica is often called sytica or psytica in layman’s language, it is a pain which is caused due to damage caused to the sciatica nerve. The pain starts from low back and travels down to the thigh, leg and finally foot. The sciatic nerve originates as a smaller nerve that has branches all over lower part of the body. It combines in the pelvis to form the sciatic nerve. Each such nerve travels down to each thigh and divides into two parts into knee, down to each leg and both feet.

The sciatic nerve follows a defined route, and has five roots at the starting point , two nerve roots from the last lumber joints and first three of the sacrum nerve root  to combine together to form a sciatic nerve. When the movement of a person is painful, it means something has gone wrong with sciatic nerve. The pain which travels down is often very excruciating which affects a person both physically and mentally. Most of you must have heard the horrifying stories of the people who have disc injuries, spinal stenosis or any other major problem with their low back area.

Your occupation can also play an important role to aggravate the situation, like in case of the people who have to drive long distance, which requires them to sit for hours together driving on bumpy roads. These bumps and jumps also put lot of pressure on the sciatic nerve and can cause damage. I such case even stretching does not help on the contrary, it may cause further damage.

The type of pain varies from person to person, in some cases it very shooting and acute, others may have pain which is continuous but is still tolerable. All those who have suffered from back pain or sciatic pain have had an experience of different type’s pain on each day of the year. The indication of sciatic pain are similar to the piriformis syndrome, both have the tingling sensation, burning, sensation of electric currents and also sometimes numbness below the knee.

Both sciatic and piriformis syndrome are partially related in the biochemical functional properties and both may be sometimes present in the same person. This makes the diagnosis even more difficult. The best remedy to get rid of the problem is Acupressure; this will definitely bring down the tension in the piriformis muscle. The stretching has to be done after you lie down on your back and pulling your knees close to your chest. Such exercise will help you to stretch your pirifomis muscle but in case you do not feel any tightness in the buttock, better do a different stretch.
